Nine playoff spots remain; who could your team face in the Conference Semifinals?

We’re a week away from the first round of playoffs, but none of the matchups are set in stone just yet. This last weekend of the regular season will lock in who makes it into the postseason and who they will face in the Conference Semifinals.

Seven of the 16 playoff spots have been clinched; five divisional winners and four wild card spots remain. The final playoff bracket will be set by Monday, July 1.

Here’s a look at each conference’s current contenders and potential scenarios in the first round:

Central Conference

Indy Eleven is the only club from the Central Conference to clinch its spot; however, Detroit City FC and Minnesota Aurora FC are frontrunners in their divisions with the potential to clinch tonight. As for the wild card bid, River Light FC has control, but there is still potential for Midwest United to swoop in.

Based on seeding and to avoid inter-divisional matchups, #1 seed Minnesota Aurora would face #3 Indy Eleven, while #2 Detroit City would go against #4 River Light.

If Midwest United were to win out and clinch the wild card bid, it would be the one going against Minnesota Aurora. Then, Detroit City and Indy Eleven would face off in the first round.

Eastern Conference

Both the Long Island Rough Riders and NC Courage U23 clinched their divisions last night to earn their playoff spots. The Mid Atlantic Division title is a tight race between Eagle FC and Lancaster Inferno, which is three points behind Eagle FC and has a game in hand going into this final weekend.

Whichever team doesn’t win the division will be in competition with South Georgia Tormenta FC and Morris Elite for the wild card bid. Each team’s PPG is within .2 of each other, making these last matches that much more important.

If the results were to stand right now, the #1 seed NC Courage would face wild card Lancaster Inferno, and the Rough Riders would play Eagle FC. If Morris Elite earns the wild card spot, it would replace Lancaster. If Tormenta wins it, the team would face Long Island and the Courage would play Eagle FC.

Southern Conference

All three divisions have their winners: Florida Elite Soccer Academy, AHFC Royals and Tennessee SC. The wild card spot is looking like it will come down to Tampa Bay United, Miami AC and Asheville City SC.

Currently, Tampa Bay holds the lead, so it would match up against the Royals. Top seed Florida Elite would play Tennessee SC. If Miami defeats Tampa Bay this weekend, Miami would replace them. If Asheville earns a big win in its final match, Asheville would take the wild card spot and face Florida Elite, with Tennessee and AHFC Royals matching up.

Western Conference

Colorado Storm is the only team to clinch from the Western Conference, but FC Olympia is one match away from securing the Northwest Division. As has been the case all season in the NorCal Division, it’s a toss-up between California Storm, Oakland Soul and SF Glens.

Only two teams advance from NorCal, which currently would be the Glens and the Storm. Oakland has a game in hand, but must face the Glens in its final match of the season.

If today’s results stood, #1 seed FC Olympia would face SF Glens while the Storms would meet up in round one. By Sunday night, we will see which of the three California teams goes into the postseason and if they will face Colorado Storm or FC Olympia.
